Librarians teach that all articles should be evaluated for accuracy, currency, relevancy, authority, methodology and more. Open access journals can be very useful and well written but you must spend more time evaluating the journal and the article than with well known peer reviewed journals. Not all open access journals are peer reviewed and not all peer reviewed open access journals are legitimate.
There are predatory journals to be aware of. "Predatory journals are a global threat. They accept articles for publication — along with authors’ fees — without performing promised quality checks for issues such as plagiarism or ethical approval."
