Free Journals and Books Online

Please use the library homepage to find fulltext articles that the library subscribes to. These are some free titles available on the Internet. Most of the books are older and outside of the copyright date. In an emergency, this would be a fast way to have access to a Shakespeare play or an older fiction work.

Theses and Dissertations

ADT Australasian Digital Theses Program consists of 42 universities. As of April, 2009 they has a total number of digital theses = 24,987 and a total number of theses: 150,636

British Library EThOS (Electronic Theses Online Service) Theses are searchable and can be limited to items currently online 'Limit search to items available for immediate download' "EThOS has been created to offer a single point of access to UK-generated post-doctoral theses and plays a significant role in showcasing UK research to the world. We now have 105 UK universities involved in the project and a total of 263,049 theses available, with almost 17,500 available for immediate download." EThOS has had a large impact on the British Library and if a thesis is NOT online it is currently taking 90 days to put it on.

Cyberthèses The portal for online French language theses. It is possible to search the University of Lyon separately as well. There is a South American Cybertesis from the University of Chile.

dissonline.de includes electronic university publications held by the Deutsche Nationalbibliothek. Click 'research' on the left menu to do a search. Most documents are in German.

DRIVER (Digital Repository Infrastructure Vision for European Research) Searches can be limited to a particular country, community or topic (Anthropology, Biology, and Computer Science) The DRIVER Information Space -- consists of approximately 1,000,000 documents -- found in journal articles, dissertations, books, lectures, reports, etc. -- harvested regularly from more than 200 institutional or thematic repositories -- from 23 European countries -- in 25 languages.

Networked Digital Library of Theses and Dissertations has 82 institutional members (US and international universities) and 2 Consortial members OhioLink and the Triangle Research Libraries. You can do a topic search and find full text dissertations and theses. (Search "American University of Paris" and you will see what some alumni have gone on to study!)

TEL (thèses-EN-ligne) This is a site for scientific theses where scientists can archive their own work.

Theses.fr As of 2006 there are approximately 65,000 theses and dissertations in preparation - 6,000 fulltext theses from France are available online. The site is constantly being updated and expanded

Theses Canada As of 2008 there are approximately 300,000 theses and dissertations on microform in Library and Archives Canada's collection. Of these approximately 50,000 are also available electronically.

Worldcat (not full text - you can request theses or dissertations through document delivery) To find theses or dissertations, choose Thesis/Dissertation under the Content drop down menu.

arXiv contains open-access reprints from journals covering Physics, Mathematics, Computer Science and Quantitative Biology. This site was created by Cornell University and partially funded by the National Science Foundation.

DOAJ Directory of Open Access Journals "This service covers free, full text, quality controlled scientific and scholarly journals. We aim to cover all subjects and languages. There are now 2182 journals in the directory."

Elephind Search the world's historical newspaper archives. This search engine searches different free newspaper archives from university and national archives. Check the 'about' page for detailed information.

A part of the Digital Schomburg, this collection provides access to the thought, perspectives and creative abilities of black women as captured in books and pamphlets published prior to 1920.

Alex Catalog of Electronic Texts These 2000 titles can be viewed or downloaded as text, pdf, html,and for palmpilots.

Bartleby is a huge online library which includes the Harvard Classics and Shelf of Fiction, dictionaries, poetry and other reference works.

Bibliomania Over 2000 titles in poetry, fiction, short stories - including Alcott, Stevenson, Edith Wharton, Thomas Hardy.

Complete Works of Shakespeare This site was produced at MIT.

ebooks@Adelaide The University of Adelaide Library's collection of classic works of Literature, Philosophy, Science, and History

Forgotten Books This site has thousands of "classical fiction, philosophy, religion, folklore, science, mythology and sacred texts" They have each title as a free pdf ebook or they offer to sell a print copy. The ones I've looked at have been older, out of copyright titles.

The Free Library includes many classics, some articles and images. You can create a free account to help organize and save your material.

Gnomon Bibliographische Datenbank "Index of publications for ancient history, classical philology, and archeology. Also includes a thesaurus that bridges the gap between English and German terms common to classical studies. In English, French, and German." A selection from the Gnomon CD-ROM 2008 with special consideration of the years since 2005.

Google Books Can do an advanced search for author, title, publication date. With advanced search OR the result screen you can limit to FULL VIEW (meaning the entire book or journal is online) and also to either BOOK or MAGAZINE. You can also limit to a particular language in the advanced search.

Great Literature Online includes poetry and fiction.

HathiTrust Digital Library includes 7,559,222 total volumes 4,254,743 book titles 185,357 serial titles 2,645,727,700 pages 281 terabytes 89 miles 6,142 tons 1,844,728 volumes (~24% of total) in the public domain! Not all titles are available in France - Click 'Full View Only' in the Catalog Search or Full text Search to limit your search.

Institute for Learning Technologies Have English translations of Aristotle, Locke, Plato and more from books dated around 1900.

Internet Archive (text archive) "The Internet Archive is a 501(c)(3) non-profit that was founded to build an Internet library, with the purpose of offering permanent access for researchers, historians, and scholars to historical collections that exist in digital format. Founded in 1996 and located in the Presidio of San Francisco, the Archive has been receiving data donations from Alexa Internet and others. In late 1999, the organization started to grow to include more well-rounded collections. Now the Internet Archive includes texts, audio, moving images, and software as well as archived web pages in our collections."

The Literature Network "We offer searchable online literature for the student, educator, or enthusiast. To find the work you're looking for start by looking through the author index. ManyBooks.net There are 27,428 eBooks available here and they're all free! Includes literature, art, criticisms, psychology, and much more.

MDZ Munich Digitization Center "handles the digitization and online publication of the cultural heritage preserved by the Bavarian State Library and by other institutions. It provides one of the largest and fastest growing digital collections in Germany, now comprising 484,028 titles available online. Access is free of charge!"

National Academies Press Choose the book you want and you will come to a page where you can pay for the book OR read it online. Look for the tab at the top 'Read This Book Online, Free!'

OAIster was originally developed at the University of Michigan Libraries with the support of a grant. "OAIster is a union catalog of millions of records representing open access resources that was built by harvesting from open access collections worldwide using the Open Archives Initiative Protocol for Metadata Harvesting (OAI-PMH). Today, OAIster includes more than 25 million records representing digital resources from more than 1,100 contributors."

Online Books Page "The Online Books Page is a website that facilitates access to books that are freely readable over the Internet." This page lists over 35,000 titles from Bartleby, Gutenberg and many more sources. A good place to look first.

Online Medieval and Classical Library The Online Medieval and Classical Library (OMACL) is a collection of some of the most important literary works of Classical and Medieval civilization.

Onread.com Books can be read online for free. Books can be downloaded but you must register and may have to pay for downloading (you get 'credit' for reviewing titles and making comments on titles).

Open Library "The Open Library website was created by the Internet Archive to demonstrate a way that books can be represented online. The vision is to create free web access to important book collections from around the world. Books are scanned and then offered in an easy-to-use interface for free reading online. If they're in the public domain, the books can be downloaded, shared and printed for free. They can also be printed for a nominal fee by a third party, who will bind and mail the book to you. The books are always FREE to read at the Open Library website."

Perseus Digital Library, created at Tufts University, includes classics (Greek, Latin and some translations) and English Renaissance as well as image archives.

Project Gutenberg contains over 30,000 free books including books in Chinese, English, Dutch, Finnish, French, German, Italian, Spanish and 40 other languages. HUGE list.

SULAIR Books in the Public Domain is Stanford University Library's public domain titles that have been digitized!

UC Press E-Books Collection (1982-2004) Click on "public access books" to see all fulltext. These books are not in the public domain but freely available thanks to the generosity of the University of California.

Universal Digital Library "The Million Book Project, an international venture led by Carnegie Mellon University in the United States, Zhejiang University in China, the Indian Institute of Science in India and the Library at Alexandria in Egypt, has completed the digitization of more than 1.5 million books, which are now available online....the Million Book Project represents the world's largest, university-based digital library of freely accessible books. At least half of its books are out of copyright, or were digitized with the permission of the copyright holders, so the complete texts are or eventually will be available free."

Victorian Women Writers Project The goal of the Victorian Women Writers Project is to produce highly accurate transcriptions of works by British women writers of the 19th century, encoded using the Standard Generalized Markup Language (SGML). The works, selected with the assistance of the Advisory Board, will include anthologies, novels, political pamphlets, religious tracts, children's books, and volumes of poetry and verse drama. Considerable attention will be given to the accuracy and completeness of the texts, and to accurate bibliographical descriptions of them.

(USA) DPLA Digital Public Library of America "offers a single access point to millions of items...from libraries, archives, and museums around the United States."

Library of Congress - Digital Collections and Services includes American history, newspapers, legislative information, photos and much more.

(France) Bibliothèque Nationale de France - Gallica has an excellent advanced search. It includes French newspaper archives, topics browsable by subject, manuscripts, cultural documentation - it is an amazing resource.

(Australia) National Library of Australia - Digital Collections consists of music, maps, pictures, manuscripts, printed works and audio recordings.

(Canada) Canada's Digital Collections (in French and English) Many collections on topics such as Canadian history, Canadian Women in Aviation, Religion, Canadian art and much more.

(England) British Library Online Gallery has virtual books (da Vinci sketches, Mozart diary with audio, a Qu'ran, a Bible, images from Sforza Hours to mention a few), online exhibitions (maps, Victorian photos, rare stamps, musical manuscripts written by Bach, Beethoven and Mozart), also the Magna Carta, a Shakespeare's First Folio.

John F. Kennedy, Dallas Police Department Collection includes 440 photographs from the Kennedy assassination.
