The AUP Library provides remote access to its databases and online journals through a program called EZProxy.
Current AUP faculty, staff and students are eligible to use our subscription databases offcampus.

Internet Explorer 6.x is your browser

Internet Explorer 6 defaults to a higher level of security for cookies than the databases can accept. To change this:

From the menu at the top of IE, select Tools
  • Select Internet Options
  • Select the Privacy tab
  • This is probably set to Medium; change to the Low setting
  • You may need to exit Internet Explorer and open it again.

The Low setting still restricts some cookies -- those that provide personal information and those that don't have a compact privacy policy.

Asked to accept a certificate

If you are asked to accept a certificate when you log in to a database, click Yes and then continue to the database. This is a result of the update to the proxy server software. Since EZProxy now supports Secure Socket Layers, you may be asked to accept a certificate at sites that use SSL.

Error message: "That username or password was incorrect. Please try again."
  • Are you a currently enrolled student? Because of our licenses with database vendors, you must be currently enrolled to use our databases.
  • Is there a pop-up blocker on your machine? If so, disable it for the time that you are using the databases.
AOL is your browser.

Minimize AOL (don't close it), open Internet Explorer, Firefox or Netscape, and try going directly to the library's homepage. http://library.aup.fr

To delete cookies

  • Right mouse click on the Start button
  • Choose Explore
  • Scroll down to your Windows folder

  • Hit the Delete key.

  • Choose Tools
  • Then Internet Options
  • Under Temporary Internet Files, click the Delete Cookies button
  • Click the Delete Files button
  • Under History, click the Clear History button
  • Click on OK
Cache
  • Choose Tool
  • Then Options
  • In the right portion of the box, double click on Privacy
  • Highlight Page History
  • Click the Clear button
  • Click on OK

Cookies

  • Choose Tool
  • Then Options
  • In the right portion of the box, double click on Privacy
  • Highlight Cookies
  • Click the Clear button
  • Click on OK

You have a pop-up blocker, personal firewall or ad blocker on your computer

Disable the pop-up blocker while you are using our databases. You can always go back and enable it again for general Internet use.

For personal firewall software, such as Norton Security, make sure that cookie blocking is set to "none" and that the browser privacy box is unchecked. You can always go back and recheck these later.

Ad blocking software may have settings that block cookies. Set the program not to block cookies.

Error message: "Error has occurred in script on this page."

If you get this error, check another library database such as EBSCO, InfoTrac or FirstSearch. If you can use these, the problem most likely lies in the fact that you either don't have Java enabled on your machine or else you have an older browser. To check if Java is enabled:

Internet Explorer 6.x
Firefox
Netscape 8.x
Choose Tools
Chose Internet Options
Choose the Security tab
Click on the Custom Level Button
Scroll down the list and look for Java
Under Java Permissions, if Disable Java is chosen, change it to Medium Safety
Click OK
Click OK again
Choose Tools
Then choose Options
Highlight Web Features and click on Enable Java and Enable Javascipt
Click OK
Choose Tools
Then choose Options
Under Security and Privacy in the right box, choose Site Controls
Under Web Features in the right side of the box, check the box for Enable Java and Enable Javascript
Click OK

If there is no place to change these settings, you may have an older browser or you need to download Java. To update Netscape go to http://channels.netscape.com/ns/browsers/download.jsp. To update Internet Explorer, go to http://www.microsoft.com/downloads/search.asp?. To download Java, go to http://www.java.com/en/index.jsp and choose the Free Download.

Do you have a personal firewall on your computer? If so, make sure that cookie blocking is set to "none" and that the browser privacy box is unchecked. You can always go back and recheck these later.

Do you have an ad blocking program such as AdSubstract on your computer? If so, these programs may have settings that block cookies. Set the program not to block cookies.

Message that IE has rejected or not set a cookie

If you get a message that IE has rejected or refused to set a cookie, you will also see this privacy icon at the bottom of your screen: . If you double-click that icon, it shows web sites where cookies were recently rejected. You can then double-click on the site and get the option to select "allow this site to use cookies." If you select that and click OK, then reattempt the login, it should clear the cookie issue.

Message that a line must be added to the ezproxy.cfg file

If you receive the following message:

"To allow /connect?session to work, your EZproxy administrator must first authorize this within the ezproxy.cfg file.
Within this database's section of the file, the following line must be added:

Host xxx.yyy.com

The EZproxy server must then be restarted to make this change take effect. "

The proxy software has not been configured for this particular database or journal. Send an email to smurray@aup.fr . Include the name of the journal or the database you were trying to access.

Having Trouble with PDF Files

Internet Explorer 5 (or above) sometimes has problems using Adobe Acrobat 4. You can either upgrade your version of Acrobat Reader at http://www.adobe.com/products/acrobat/readstep2.html or you can set Adobe to be used by IE by following these steps:

  • Open Adobe Acrobat (from your Start --> Program menu)
  • Click on File --> Preferences --> General
  • Uncheck the box next to Web Browser Integration

Firewalls at the remote user's site

Most ISPs do not limit the areas their users can access on the Internet, so home users do not tend to encounter problems with firewalls. However, corporate sites often do employ firewalls and may be highly restrictive in what their employees can access. If you provide content for a given corporate site, the corporate site may be willing to open access through their firewall to your EZproxy server. However, if a corporate site refuses to open access, your users will not be able to access EZproxy.

It's important to understand that corporate firewall restrictions are not unique to EZproxy, but are actually encountered when implementing any proxy server solution for remote access.

If you receive this error, please contact smurray@aup.fr and let her know that the log file has probably gotten too large.  Please quote the message in your text.  Thank you!
